FURNITURE IS A TERM USED IN LETTERPRESS PRINTING, WHICH REFERS TO THE LOW-HEIGHT PIECES OF WOOD OR METAL THAT BLOCK OUT WHITE SPACE IN A COMPOSITION. MOVABLE TYPE IS LAID OUT AND SET IN A CHASE, WHICH MUST BE PACKED OUT WITH FURNITURE BEFORE IT CAN BE PRINTED WITH.

Typeface design for Civic Room gallery in Glasgow, in collaboration with After The News & signpainter E.B. Scott. The letterforms were painted directly onto the gallery windows to reference its past lives as a green grocers and a bank, and the visible traces of these histories on the glass. Alternate characters were made for the C and R, which took inspiration from the distinctive architectural features of the building.
